WHAT THE CHECK COVERS
One check for structure and position 9
The validator applies the mechanical rules in Annex II. It does not confirm that a WMI was assigned to a manufacturer or that the VDS and VIS match an approved vehicle type.
VIS numeric positions
Confirms that positions 14–17 contain digits, as required for the final four VIS characters.
Check digit in position 9
Recalculates the weighted value and compares the result with the character already present in the VIN.
A valid check digit is not a type-approval decision
Use the result as a fast production or data-entry check. The manufacturer remains responsible for the assigned WMI, approved VIN structure, uniqueness, marking and traceability.
