Turn the approved structure into fixed production rules
Regulation (EU) 2018/858 requires manufacturers to establish procedures so series production remains in conformity with the approved type. For VIN work, that means converting the approved WMI, VDS and VIS logic into a controlled production definition.
Operators should not rebuild the structure from memory for every vehicle.
Validate before saving a VIN series
Production software should reject I, O and Q, require digits in the final four VIS positions, calculate position 9 and check existing records for duplicate VINs. For a series, review the first and last completed VIN and the intended serial range.
These controls reduce transcription and range-overlap errors without replacing the manufacturer’s formal conformity procedures.
Preserve the profile history
If an approved definition changes, archive the old profile and introduce a new controlled version. Avoid retroactively altering VINs already reserved, marked or reported.
A clear change history shows which structure was active when each production record was created.
